foot storm pipe. city officials say the big pipe was designed to safely transport a massive amount of water underneath this road steering rain water away from homes but somehow it failed. on sunday morning, the road caved in - the crater is now huge, 80 feet long, 30 wide and 18 feet deep. the failure is under investigation, but in the meantime, the race is on to figure out how to put in another drainage system. city officials say if there is not a temporary fix put in before the next storm hits ... it could be disasterous out here. also in the east bay... the amount we are expecting the rains to come back on tuesday. with a heavy rainfall on wednesday. the goal is to get down to this storm pipe by this time tomorrow as we can assess the situation. if we were exposed like this water would be the enemy when it comes to soil. if it came in
like this fully exposed it could be catastrophic. we are trying to get the utility company to get down to the storm drain to reassess it and get it working for wednesday. if not, some taboret control measures and be prepared for the next storm. >> take a look. you are watching working crews pulled out in generators, likes to my left. they are going to be working until midnight. it will take a couple of hours off and they will return on the sunrise. they will continue this work. of course they are working with in this in a deadline. coming up at 6:00 p.m. i spoke to some residents on how they have been dealing with this. that will be coming up at 6:00 p.m. terisa estacio. >>pam: also in the east bay, this 60-feet tall linden tree, came down during the storm early sunday morning, in the backyard of this home on west i ()eye)á
street in benicia tree removers were busy there today the owner of the home says, she was startled by her neighbor's tree when it came crashing down onto her home just before sunrise (chainsaws) >> i woke up at 4:30 and i heard a huge boom it could've been a terrible disaster. i anticipated and fortunately it did not come through the roof. the outdoor deck was there to capture the tree i do not know what could have happened. the tree could have gone any which way. it could have gone to the neighbor's house, missed the trampoline amazingly. and you can see it is resting right there. it did not come through any windows, we are very lucky. >> the owners said that in the did tree has withstood
80 years of storms with the exception of this past sunday. >> let me show you an army of cleaners have taken over the area around 17th and folsom in san francisco's mission district. they have been busy mopping floors and disinfecting surfaces ... of the businesses and homes which were swamped with water from the backed up sewage system. kron4's maureen kelly has new video which shows the mess. >> here you can see cell phone video that shows at least a foot of water outside the stable café on 2100 block of folsom. and here is what the courtyard looked likewith tables and chairs now sitting in a minature lagoonas a winebarrel floats on the mix of rain water and sewage. people are standing on top of sandbags that were brought in by the cityin case the storm overwhelmed the sewage system as it has three other times since 2004but that precaution was not enough for the business and residents here bites >> of the manhole covers

guadalupe river is holding. much to the satisfaction of the residents, and the san jose water district. this guadeloupe river has been a problem in the past. the previous work has some helped it hold up. this was 1995 when the river flooded into the city causing a major mass. 20 04, the san jose water district began with a $10.6 million project removing sediment and allowed 7500 homes. this latest round of storms did not cause any floodings. this is what it looked like yesterday in the santa cruz mountains. a dry out after the saturation on sunday the latest road closures, and mop mud-with rob fladeboe
has the rest of that story. >> as much as fifteen inches of rain in parts of the santa cruz mountains overt the past five days has taken a toll on the narrow, winding roads here. vine hill road in scotts valley is now closed indefinitely after a large musdlisde took lane. >> it is a big commute route from highway 17 from the press lower road. we do have one lane completely washed out and a portion broken off. we are trying to assess the situation. >> of crews are also working on several mostly minor mudslides that sent rocks and debris onto highway 17. there is a lot of this too, a lot of standing water as a result of backed up storm drains. road closures and unstable hillsides have many residents looking for detours. >> it is about 5 mi. down
the road. and then about another 4 mi. back up the road. it is an extra 10 minutes or so to get to scotts valley. >> and power outages linger as amid downed trees and power lines. this crew worked through the night to restore electricity to a couple of dozen homes here on laurel glen drive. in the santa cruz mountains rob fladeboe kron 4 news >> as much for the santa cruz mountains and the guadalupe river. the residents will keep an eye out it is still dry and the san jose water district will also keep a close eye. reporting live, kron 4. >>pam: the storm causing at least one school to shut down. classes at whitehill middle school in fairfax had to be canceled today.. due to flooding. and an announcement will be posted on the school's website ... letting parents know if the school will reopen tomorrow. now to a live check on the weather... and it is a big

continue to press south with moisture associated. but it will move quicker. not such extravagant rainfall totals. we will see how much rainfall totals we can expect coming up in just a bit. >> three east bay firefighters seriously hurt... following a string of accidents on a rain- soaked highway. kron4's justine waldman has more on their recovery.. and the dramatic video from the crash. a wealthy silicon valley couple -- the victims of a deadly home invasion. >> the amount of excruciating pain is evident on this firefighters face. three firefighters were seriously hurt after a chain reaction accident on highway 24. they were soaked and the suffering as they were trying to save someone else. >> they are in good spirits. >> the fire chief is close to their bed and walnut creek hospital. the firefighter/paramedic and were all on the shoulder of the highway. at the exit dealing with a traffic
